About Our Blog

Hi!  We’re kindergarten, first and second grade students and our teacher is Mrs. Koch!  We are a part of the Primary SAGE Program (Students in Academically Gifted Education) here in the North Kansas City School District.  We attend SAGE class one day each week.  We use our blog to share all the great things we’re learning about and doing in our class.

Our blogs has a "home page"- Primary Thinkers.  It also has 5 additional blogs that link from it.   You will find the Monday through Friday blog links on the right side of our home page.
What is a blog?

A blog is like an online journal.  Blogs have an administrator (Mrs. Koch is ours,) who is able to add posts.  The archive on the panel to the right, lets you search through old blog posts, which are grouped by the month in which the blog was written.  Our side bar also has ‘widgets’, which are little interactive tools.  We have a ‘ClustrMap’ which shows you from where our visitors have come.

We want to provide some basic information about "blogs" and "blogging." Below is a short Common Craft video, "Blogs in Plain English."

Subscribe Via Email

You can check the blog at any time of day or night, or you can follow our blog via email.  This means you will get an email when there’s something new added to the blog.  On the panel on the right, you can enter your email address to subscribe.  Be sure to also subscribe to your child's Rotation Day blog.  You will subscribe to the Rotation Day blog by going to it on the A-E links.  Once there, you can subscribe by email or RSS Feed.)

Subscribe Via RSS Feed

Another subscription option is an RSS Feed.  An RSS Feed (Really Simple Syndication) allows users to avoid manually inspecting all of the websites in which they are interested. By subscribing to websites, all new content is pushed onto their browsers when it becomes available.

To use this form of a subscription, you must first sign up for a "feed reader" such as Google Reader.  This is an advantage if you follow several blogs as the content from all of your subscriptions is sent to just one place.  You can subscribe to one or more of our blogs on the panel on the right hand side.  (**Subscribing to Primary Thinkers does not automatically sign you up for a specific Rotation Day blog.  Each blog, A-E has its own subscription.)  For more information on RSS Feeds, check out the Common Craft video, RSS in Plain English.

Why do we Blog?

Blogs are great because you can share your work and ideas with a widespread audience. People from all over the world can see the work we're doing in class.  You can even share our blog address with grandparents and other interested relatives so they can see what we're up to!

Students have an opportunity to learn many academic and life skills through blogging.  Besides improving our reading and writing skills, an important instructional outcome is learning appropriate online behavior, or netiquette and essential cyber safety skills.  We can also create global blogging connections with other schools all over the world.

Parents are encouraged to read over "Our Blogging Guidelines" to learn how we keep our blog secure.
