  1. Hi Mrs. Koch!! I experienced my first wildfire. We were evacuated from the Manitou Cliff Dwellings in Colorado Springs. So instead of going to Pike's Peak, we went to Silverthorne and hiked to Lily Pad Lake. In July I went to northern Minnesota with my whole family. I learned how to cast for fish. After a few casts, I caught my first Northern with my Uncle Trent and my Grandad. It was a great summer!!! Caleb

  3. Hi Caleb,
That was a great, quality comment and it sounds like you had a very exciting summer. I have never been near a wild fire area. Could you smell the smoke or see the flames in the distance? Were you or your parents scared at all? It sounds kind of scary to me.

I used to fish in my grandpa's pond, but there didn't seem to be a lot of technique to learn-- put on worm, drop line, wait for the bobber to sink, reel in the fish. Then again, I wasn't very good at it so maybe I was missing some key steps. :-)

What kind of fish is a "Northern?" Was it very big? If you have any pictures, I'd love to see them. I'm looking forward to having you back in class next week! Thanks for posting your comment!

  4. Hi Cora,

I'm glad you liked the "video". It is really called an enhanced podcast. I'm going to teach you how to make them this year. The dust storm, or haboob, was pretty cool. It was amazing how it came up so fast. It was sunny and beautiful outside with very little wind and all of the sudden the winds picked up and the dust cloud rolled in.

It sounds like you had a great summer. What was your favorite part of your Florida trip? Did you pick up any sea shells? I love to look for them on the beach. Were the waves very big? I have never been to Destin. I've heard the sand is soft and white there. If you have a picture from your vacation, you should bring it in to share with our class.

Thank you for taking the time to post a comment. I liked that you remembered to start with a compliment and you included several details about your trip. Remember to always begin your sentences with a capital letter and always capitalize the word "I."

I am excited to start our classes. I have several surprises to share with you all!

  6. Dear Mrs. Koch,
It sounds like you had a good summer. We went to World's of Fun and Ocean's of Fun a lot. I rode the Mamba and loved it. My favorite ride at Ocean's of Fun is Diamondhead. We spent the night in a tent at World's of Fun in the rain! Love,
    Anna

  7. Dear Orion,

I didn't really know what it was when it started, so I didn't know enough to be afraid. I mostly thought it was cool and I kept wondering about the Sahara Desert in Africa. I wondered if there are haboobs in that desert? If there are, I wonder where the people take cover? In Arizona, it was mostly dust flying around. I wonder if a sand storm hurts when the sand blows and hits you?

By the way, silly boy, I asked you to watch that you are using capital letters on proper nouns and to start sentences, but you shouldn't type in all capital letters. People who communicate on websites and blogs consider that to be "shouting." They think it is rude.

--I do love it that you are commenting a lot, but this weekend, when the weather is nice, I want you to walk away from your computer and electronic games and go play outside with friends!

    Love,
    Mrs. Koch

  8. Dear Anna,

That was a great, quality comment! My summer was pretty good, but I sure got tired of hot weather. Was this your first time on the Mamba? I think I may have ridden it once a long time ago, but you won't find me on it now. How did you get to camp overnight at World's of Fun? We did not go camping at all this summer. I really miss it. My favorite camping weekends were when it was rainy. We would relax, sleep in, read books and play cards. Those were some of the best times with my kids.

Have a wonderful weekend and tell your brother I said hello.
